Galaxy S8 Debuts Exynos 8895

Now that the Galaxy S8 is available, we see that Samsung has delivered some clear upgrades over last year’s Galaxy S7. In addition to sporting an innovative industrial design, the new phone relies on the company’s in-house Exynos 8895 to boost performance. It is the industry’s first to feature a 10nm processor; some models use the Exynos chip, whereas others use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835, which Samsung also manufactures in 10nm. The Snapdragon version ships to the U.S. and a few Asian countries, and the Exynos version ships throughout Europe and most of Asia.

Despite the part number, the 8895 is the first chip in the Exynos 9 series. It features a second-generation version of Samsung’s custom CPU design, which is fully ARMv8 compatible. The 10nm process boosts the peak clock speed from 2.3GHz to 2.6GHz. The chip takes advantage of ARM’s next-generation GPU design to deliver a much bigger gain in graphics performance, and a new modem supports LTE downloads at a blazing 1.0Gbps. The 10nm transistors should also improve battery life. As with other Exynos chips, Samsung will likely offer the 8895 as a merchant product to a few select vendors after some period of exclusivity.

Samsung manufactures most of the important chips in the Galaxy S8, including the main processor and the memories. To support the new LTE modem, the company developed an RF transceiver, known as the Shannon 955, that we believe integrates five downlink channels and two uplink channels in a single chip. Samsung claims that the 8895 also integrates a GNSS (location) baseband, putting it on a par with Qualcomm Snapdragon processors; the Galaxy S8, however, uses a Broadcom BCM4774 for the GNSS function instead of the on-chip baseband.
