Exynos 9810 Shows Powerful New CPU

Now that the Galaxy S9 is shipping, benchmarks verify that the Exynos 9810 includes a new CPU that offers nearly twice the performance of previous Exynos chips, putting it well ahead of any available Cortex design and into the class of Apple’s custom CPUs. The new flagship processor is based on Samsung’s third-generation in-house CPU along with a massive 18-core G72 GPU and a 1.2Gbps modem.

The company also announced a new Exynos 9610 processor that targets the mid-premium segment with a powerful Big.Little combination of four Cortex-A73 CPUs and four Cortex-A53 CPUs, in addition to high-end video and camera capabilities. The 10nm technology offers leading-edge power efficiency, which Samsung currently reserves for its high-end Exynos 9810. To save cost, however, the 9610 skimps a bit on the GPU, using a three-core Mali-G72 design, and the LTE modem tops out at 600Mbps. The chip is scheduled to appear in Samsung phones by the end of this year and may become available to other phone makers as well.

The Exynos 7872 is the third Exynos chip announced this year. Targeting midrange phones, the 7872 is a hexa-core design with two Cortex-A73 CPUs and scaled-back graphics and video capabilities. The 14nm processor currently ships in the M6s from Chinese OEM Meizu. These three new chips are Samsung’s first to support CDMA, which allows the remaining CDMA operators in the U.S., China, and elsewhere to adopt Exynos-based phones.

The phone maker continues to invest heavily in the Exynos line, developing its own CPU, modem, and connectivity technology and integrating them into a family of chips that it updates regularly. Designing its own processors helps Samsung differentiate its phones and gives it leverage when negotiating with processor suppliers.
