The Linley Group Releases Server Processor Report, Details New Metrics Driving Purchasing Decisions

Evolving Cloud Workloads Impact Server-Processor and System Architectures

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – November 27, 2012 –The Linley Group today announced availability of its latest report, "A Guide to Server Processors, Second Edition,” which analyzes the ongoing shift in buying priorities from “performance per processor” to “performance per watt” and “performance per watt per dollar.” As data center and cloud administrators struggle to address evolving workloads without increasing capital and operating expenses, The Linley Group believes the emphasis on innovation will rise. Meanwhile, backward software compatibility will become less important, creating opportunities for new entrants in the server processor space.

Capital and operating costs have become paramount, giving rise to disruptive server designs and power-efficient CPU architectures,” said Jag Bolaria, senior analyst at The Linley Group. “The need to increase physical density translates into opportunities for those processor suppliers who can enable new, innovative form factors, such as blade servers and microservers, that drive down total cost of ownership.”

According to The Linley Group, cloud computing and high-performance computing (HPC) are the two primary segments driving growth in the server market. The firm expects server processor shipments will grow by an average rate of nearly 8 percent through 2016, reaching a total of about 25 million processors in that year.

The report analyzes processors specifically targeted at server applications. Intel remains the established leader with its x86 solutions, however, AMD has a bold new strategy with its x86 and future Cortex-A57 offerings. Meanwhile, early ARM suppliers Calxeda and Marvell face competition from AppliedMicro and Cavium with their high-performance ARM 64-bit solutions. 57 offerings. =ons, however, AMD has a bold new strategy with its x86operating expensesIn addition to covering processors specifically targeted at server applications, this edition has been expanded to include coverage of coprocessors used in high-performance computing (HPC) including Intel’s Xeon Phi and Nvidia’s Tesla.

The Linley Group examines processor performance, integration, power dissipation, and overall system design. In-depth chapters analyze vendors and products, identifying strengths and weaknesses, while also presenting key details and roadmaps.
