MediaTek Helio G90 Ups Its Game

August 20, 2019

Author: Mike Demler

Flagship smartphone buyers expect best-in-class performance in all categories. For the mid-premium segment, however, handset vendors spin a variety of models that appeal to different customers by offering a few near-premium features. MediaTek is following this strategy in its new Helio G-series processors, which target mobile gamers. It’s rolling out two models that share the same silicon: the Helio G90 and the performance-binned Helio G90T. To target gamers, they improve the CPU, display, graphics, and wireless-connectivity performance compared with the Helio P90. The P90 and other mid-premium chips typically deliver half the GPU performance of a premium chip, but the G90 reduces costs by omitting its predecessor’s custom AI accelerator (AIA).

The new G-series employs MediaTek’s HyperEngine, which reduces response times in multiplayer games such as Fortnite and PUBG. Like gaming laptops, this technology allows users to minimize latency by simultaneously connecting to two Wi-Fi routers, the 2.4GHz and 5.0 GHz Wi-Fi bands, and Wi-Fi plus LTE. In all cases, it also monitors the wireless-link quality, reducing lag by choosing the fastest links. The G90 beats its primary competitor—the Snapdragon 730G—on every performance benchmark, and it comes within 10% of the Kirin 810 despite Huawei’s use of 7nm technology.
