Snapdragon 780G Doubles AI Speed

April 13, 2021

The Snapdragon 780G is Qualcomm’s latest 5G mid-premium processor for smartphones. Compared with last year’s Snapdragon 765G, it doubles AI performance and integrates a new CPU cluster that boosts multicore processing by 78%. These changes aim to block MediaTek’s top-of-the-line Dimensity 1200 from competing against the flagship Snapdragon 888.

The 780G implements a three-tier CPU architecture, replacing the 765G’s older Cortex-A76 with Cortex-A78, Arm’s latest A-series design.  Qualcomm modified its CPU cluster by shifting from two big cores to four. Relative to the 765G, the new processor adds another image-processing core and features Qualcomm’s latest 5G modem. It uses a Samsung 5nm LP process to keep power consumption under control. Phones based on the 780G are expected to reach consumers by 2Q21.

Relative to the Snapdragon 765G, Qualcomm radically transformed the 780G’s CPU cluster. The new design comprises a single prime Cortex-A78 running at 2.4GHz, three “big” A78s running at 2.2GHz, and four “little” Cortex-A55s running at up to 1.9GHz. The shift from a 1+1+6 layout to 1+3+4 allows designers to boost multicore performance with only a moderate die-area penalty.
